Serious Disruption

Noticeable Oddities of the Day:

I find certain things in this country utterly amusing at times… Today the first day of proper snow and everything just stops working. Most Tube lines have been suspended early this morning and the London transport website mentions: ‘As a result of heavy snowfall overnight, transport services in London are severely disrupted this morning. The advice to passengers is to check before you travel, expect disruption. Further heavy snowfall is forecast throughout today and disruption is likely to continue throughout Monday.’

People just have a day off because of this. I can’t remember I ever had a day off from work in Amsterdam because of a bit of snow. You just have to find a way to get there no matter what it takes, the boss is expecting you. I think the amount of snow that fell overnight is nothing compared to the kind of heavy snowfall on the continent or even further up north in England or Scotland. It’s kinda funny to see that whenever there’s a few one days of ‘heavy’ snowfall the capital seems to stop functioning and everything turns to chaos.

I guess I’m ‘too Dutch’ to understand the wuss attitude, I used to cycle to work, whether there was a gale force 10 out there, 15cm of snow, a temperature of -20 Cº or pissing down rain.

  1. hehe that’s funny.

I remember once when there was real heave snowfall in the Netherlands, the company i worked for arranged for special snow busses to pick people up near their house! You better work!

    Love those snowflake pictures btw.

  2. Nice blanket ya got there ;-)

    Those views sure look different.

Bet it was nice in the dark and early morning.

The reactions there sound just like when I lived in the south and a bit of snow fell.

It became an excuse to have a day off… an excuse I can no longer use now that I’m back in the Water-Winter Wonderland :-O

Nice crystals even without a lens.

Isn’t interesting how if you were to touch just one flake it disappears almost instantly. Yet let ’em call up all their buddies and they can bring a mighty city to its knees ;-)

  3. When we had the snowstorm last month here in Seattle, everyone freaked out. People just wimp out here and the buses stop running for the most part. For almost two weeks we had the craziest snowy weather we have not seen in over a decade.
It was awesome to see all this snow!

  4. See? That’s what I mean *LOL* That’s the attitude… ;) I think I had to call a cab a few times. I once had an art director job all the way in East Amsterdam at the end of Zeeburgerpad near Cruquiusweg, I cycled there each day which took me fifty minutes to get there and fifty back. Yes at times I hated it but it didn’t stop me ;)

Snowflake pics: thank you :) I’m surprised they turned out so well without the proper lens :)

  5. It was beautiful until 07.00 in the morning when it got spoiled by too many people walking about… I saw a fox but he was too quick so the picture was all blurry but it was amazing to see, he seemed to like the snow and I could follow his tracks, he came up to the front door, probably looking for food in the recycle containers :)

I like how those pictures turned out but you can imagine how they would be if I had the right lens here? ;) I need gear…

  6. Same here… I don’t get that panic attitude, it’s just some snow… and I know that a far more serious problem is up north in Scotland where people won’t be able to leave the house and have to stay in for weeks…

I like snow ;) and yes it is awesome!

(ps I had to remove your link because of some nosy people who are digging around)

  7. Wow!! The pics are really cool :) I am still to see snow and touch it too :)

I was having a look at the news this morning and I was freezing just to think about how cold it must be now :)

My boss is going to the UK today and I was feeling jelaous because I would like to see snow :)

  8. I’m happy to hear you like my pictures, thanks Wen :) I’m sure you’ll get the opportunity to experience snow one day! Nah, it wasn’t that cold, cold is -18C° *hehe* It’s always so much warmer here in London than I’m used to in NL, really not that bad, but I can imagine compared to the temperatures in Malta it must seem cold ;)

Don’t be jealous of your boss *LOL* the UK was chaos (I still don’t understand why that happened and I saw on the news earlier tonight that quite some people share my opinion on this) for two days with 800 flights canceled etc. It would’ve been disaster for you ;) Best to go to Sweden or Norway for some decent snow :)

  9. The quick brown fox jumps…. oops…. sorry ;-)

    Yup, you need gear :-)

(but these are still nice as they are)

  10. That’s funny in a rather cute way :) Wouldn’t complain if I “had to” have a day off just because of snow… But then, being a student I get an awful lot of days off for no reason whatsoever, so I’m not jealous :D

  11. It’s so over the top… ;) but you’re right, I wouldn’t complain either if I’d had an unexpected day off *hehe* Ah yes… the positive side to being a student… having the luxury to use your time as you like ;) They say it’s the best time of your life, only now I realise why… *LOL* Enjoy while you can!

  12. WOW T. those photos are absolutely beautiful! And WOW that’s alot of snow! I wouldn’t know what to do with it all. ;)

    Pretty Pretty Pretty!!!!

    I love the snowflake photo!

Thank you for your comments T. … I always appreciate you. You always make me feel better. :)

  13. Hey Monica, thank you! :) Oh I know so well what to do with it all, I would have a snowball fight and take snow showers, find the highest and steepest hill and slide down *hehe* Unfortunately I was ill and not allowed to go out and play :( Perhaps next time…

Thanks for the compliments Monica, I was surprised those snowflakes came out so well :)

And I’m happy I could make you feel better, hugs back at you!
