Pancakes, Noodle Soup and Bapao

I’m having serious food cravings lately and I think it’s because I’ve lost so much weight over the last two weeks having to deal with a stomach bug and ear infection. Antibiotics didn’t really work and I was told at the hospital that I need to consider more surgery [I’m so looking forward to that!] I’ll have to have a CT scan done before I’ll make a decision. I still have vivid memories of the last time when they removed part of the bone without my consent.

But jeez those cravings… whenever food is mentioned it’s instantly stuck in my head. Yesterday I was reminded of pancakes for the second time, I haven’t had a bacon/apple pancake ever since I left the Lowlands and I went through each kitchen cupboard to look for a bottle of Wester Stroop. I think I’ve chucked it in the bin, I had no bacon either, just apple so instead I melted some extremely macho chocolate which was a gift and so tasty.

Then Ismoyo mentioned ‘Indonesian Bapao’ on her blog and again I had this instant craving for the wonderful flavours and succulence meat of an authentic Bapao. I wish I hadn’t read those two words because it’s now haunting me and so I’ve decided to make them for lunch this week. Actually make a whole batch and put a few in the freezer. I wonder if I should experiment with shrimp and crab meat, not authentic really but my own recipe: could be very nice…

Guess what… I went to Tesco on Saturday and found out that they’ve started to sell Indonesian products: boemboes [Indonesian spice pastes], satay marinade, kroepoek [prawn crackers] etc. etc. all by my favourite ‘Dutch’ brand. I so hope they’ll get the complete assortment! Oh… and it’s about time I have a proper Mie Ayam this week… *hehe*

What is wrong with me? Please don’t mention any more food on your posts… :P

My mini pancakes: finger licking good! My all time favourite Pannekoekenhuis

  1. I’m always in a mood to eat, except for two occassions: a) when I’m freshly in love or b) on the day of a very frightening exam… other than those two mentioned, I feel like eating nonstop… Got my thingers crossed for you for the health problems to become better!!!

  2. hihi… sorry about the mention of ****bleep***. ;)
how jealous am i that you now can buy the indonesian spices and all at your local grocery store?! NY still hasn’t caught on. I did find out about a small chinese/indonesian shop in the city, i still have to check out. Keeping my fingers crossed. Now i’m always bugging people from the lowlands that come and visit to bring me indonesian ingredients!

  3. *LOL* I’m happy you didn’t mention any kind of food in a post lately then *hehe* Is there any typical Czech food that you would be craving for while you’d be on your trip in Spain and/or France? :)

Thank you for keeping your fingers crossed :) After having the scans done I’ll probably be too chicken to have surgery if needed ;) :o

  4. *hehe* I saw that picture and I read your text and I was like: oh man, what did she do to me? :P It’s cool: I’m gonna make them this week and I have a fan already who was pleased to hear about my decision ;)

Yes I’m lucky that Tesco decided to import some stuff but it’s twice as much as it is in the Lowlands and they only do some bits and pieces still. So I hope they’ll stick with the products. You can never be certain though, Tesco is extremely unreliable like that, it might be there this week but gone the next :(

I hope you’ll be able to find the things at your shop! I noticed that I started to cook more authentic Indonesian since I can’t find the pastes etc. meaning I have to make them myself and to be honest it is much nicer than the preprepared ones! :)

  5. Sorry to hear about the antibiotics which didn’t really work and the CT Scan…I will cross my fingers for you so that everything will be fine.

I loved your pancakes pic :) I love pancakes. I prepare them every single sunday morning ;) as my father used to :)

Your pancakes sound really original though! I would have to give them a try :)

    Cheers T. :)

  6. Thank you Wen :) Still have to see my GP, I don’t really feel like going there, it’s always such a hassle but I will at some point.

You make pancakes every Sunday morning? Wow… That’s a sweet way of holding on to memories from home and turn it into your family tradition, how nice! :)

Apple and bacon: so good! Thin slices of sweet apple [Jona’s are perfect!] and you might want to grill the bacon first until it’s crispy [thin bacon as well btw!]. It doesn’t really need syrup but if you could get an apple syrup there than I would definitely give it a try :)

    Bon appétit! ;)

  7. Now ya did it :-O

No apples…. but I do have bacon :-)

And waffles… not as yummie looking as your pancakes though.

Listen those cravings and eat and get strong :-)

  8. *LOL* Well I hope you’ll have those today ;)

I eat too much lately :-O

    btw I didn’t start this ;)

  9. Good because that might be exactly the reason why I put it there ;)
Payback time *hehe* Glad it worked :-O

  10. That pannenkoekenhuis looks like the perfect place for some pancakes… and jeez, all I had to do was walk one more street over and I would have found it!!

Hmmm (or should I say mmmm)… just saw some stroopwafel on there. Darn it, I just had my normal waffles but maybe I’ll try to do some of those tomorrow ;-)
