A Dreamworld

Anton Pieck

  • 19 April 1895 – 25 November 1987
  • Anton Franciscus Pieck was a famous Dutch painter, artist and graphic artist. As a drawing teacher in Bloemendaal from 1920 to 1960, he is best known for his nostalgic and fairytale-like drawings, appearing regularly on cards and calendars.

The world has turned into an evocative enchanting place, a place of mystery, silence, crystals, crispness and magical light. A soft blanket, inviting to explore this mysterious world, go out and play like the foxes do at night. The light is amazing and the night seems less dark than usual because of the reflections of billions of crystals. Crystals floating down in a gentle but steady way covering all that looked so familiar in a crisp glistening wrapping, a surprise gift of nature.

It reminds me of one of my favourite Dutch painters, Anton Pieck who had the ability to present each of his paintings into the same kind of magical world. I can’t sleep, I have a high fever because of an ear infection [had to visit the hospital last night], I’m hoarse because of a sore throat and a cold but I’m somehow too excited to be tired. So I spent some time chasing snowflakes, taking pictures and looking for some beautiful images by Anton Pieck.

This is what dreams are made of…

  1. I love the second picture, very fairytale-like :) I admire people who can spomehow bring themselves to enjoy winter, that’s simply something I can’t do… in pictures, maybe :)

  2. hehe… so I’m not the only winter Grinch around here :-O
I’m more of a Grinch this year ’cause I have to deal with it, whereas last winter I was able to go out and “capture” what you describe above. But I do still have my moments. Especially in the dark when there’s a clear sky with a bright moon before a new snow is all marked up by the late risers ;-)
Jeez, that second pic is soooo cold… icicles inside?
Kind of how I feel this year inside even though it might look nice outside.
I like how in the first two how he really only colors selected items. And each one seems to have a stark contrast.
The 3rd is warm and cozy inside, but outside? Kind of scary.
The 1st it seems everyone is enjoying the winter. But then I look at the snowman…. he doesn’t too too happy. And the trees and birds… hmm. I wonder what he is trying to say about winter?
I thought I’d go to the PO and leave the first footsteps in a new snow this morning. Ain’t I the confused one? Do I stay in and hibernate? Or go look for some of that mystery?
I’ll have to wait and see. Seems the weather readers are off tonight. Now they say no new snow till daylight.
Well, good I ain’t over there. I might be looking to make some snowballs :-O

  3. I wish I could show some of the real fairytale paintings he did, I have a book somewhere but I have no idea where it is hence me looking on the internet *hehe* There are better pictures to be found in the book than online. I like the second picture as well, it has something really cosy about it :)

I think you hear the child in me that would like to go out and play ;) I’m not sure how I would feel if I have to face it each day. Lucky me the weather in the Lowlands is always different so one type of weather doesn’t stay for weeks, it’s very diverse. And in London it’s quite the same just always about 5 degrees warmer.

I’m sure the weather gets a lot colder in the Czech Republic, so I ain’t surprised to hear you don’t like it ;)

  4. The artist loved to paint slightly older periods, hence the icicles indoors, but I remember I slept in the house my mum was born once, in the attic and there were icicles at the windows too in the morning. It was normal in the Lowlands to only have a small coal heater in the lounge while the rest of the house wasn’t heated. I grew up with just one coal heater, people don’t realise what luxuries they have these days.

I have to stay in still: no snow fun for me unfortunately, ill means ill and I need to recover :(

  5. Sorry to hear about the ear infection and the sore throat :( Get well soon T.!

I loved the pictures of Anton Pieck, especially the last one. They remind me of my fairy tales books when I was a kid :)

Thanks for sharing :) Now I know a bit about a new artist for me ;)

  6. Thanks Wen :) The antibiotics are starting to kick in, still very tired but feeling slightly better than over the weekend. I really need to find that book so I can show you some more… If you look up his name on Wikipedia you’ll find pictures of a theme park he designed in the 50’s which was in a fairytale forest. They build a whole modern park around it but the original is still there, you can see/read in the article :) I always admired him ever since I was kid.

If you ever get a chance to visit NL don’t forget to visit the park; I’m sure you would love that :)

    groetjes,
