Vote Earth

Vote Earth: your light switch is your vote!

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming. For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming.

WWF are urging the world to Vote Earth and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009. Vote Earth by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm your local time.

  1. I dunno, where I live, there’s a giant tree blocking nearly all sunlight that comes inside through the window so we basically have to have the light switched on even during the day. So I’m not sure if it would be all that significant for Earth if we had it off for that little while. Having the tree put down would probably be a more pro-Earth action in this scenario, but somehow that just feels kind of wrong because of the whole concept (besides it’s not like my roomie and I can actually have something done about the tree since we live in a dorm and the property ain’t ours…)

  2. I saw the news today showing the major world landmarks being switched off (Eiffel tower, Giza pyramids, big ben, etc) It is a fantastic initiative.

  3. I guess your case is an exception ;) Most people don’t have giant trees blocking their windows but I’m sure there must be other ways to contribute to the idea. It’s more about making people aware of things, just the fact that you have been thinking about this is enough ;)

And yes cutting down a tree feels wrong but I’m sure that if you would’ve found a way to contribute you would’ve done it :)

  4. I wasn’t feeling very well last night so I said to myself, if I’m this tired I might as well go to bed early and leave all the lights off all night long ;) So I did and went to bed extremely early and slept for at least 16 hours… (down with some bug)

I hope people will get more aware of all the energy waste! My parents made me very aware of these kind of things and I’m still grateful for that, I contribute whenever possible.
